The Strude #19 poster features one of the images from the series by Trine Søndergaard titled “Strude” that was created between 2007 and 2010.
In this series of hyper realistic photographic portraits, Trine Søndergaard depicts present day women and girls wearing traditional clothing from the Danish island of Fanø.
The costumes mark the different stages of life, e.g. confirmation, wedding and widowhood,
In Strude #19 the worn headgear is called a “Bore” a piece that was worn by the bride at her wedding. A “bore” is a garland of artificial flowers and pearls, that were stitched to the bride’s braided hair. The “bore” has a small mirror that symbolizes, that the woman when married needs to have eyes in the back of her head. The mirror also averts ”evil eyes”.
In the series, Trine Søndergaard examines the portrait as a genre by using the headgear. She creates a duality in the portraits between what is said and what is left unsaid; the visible and the invisible.
Layered with tradition, hidden symbols and forgotten meaning, Søndergaard operates between past and present, bringing attention to a long forgotten part of Nordic cultural history as well as contemporary political debates on the public appearances and rights of women.
Photos from the Strude series are represented in several public collections e.g. The National Collection of Photography in The Royal Danish Library, Gothenburg Museum of Art, The Art Museum in Tønder and The National Museum in Oslo.
The poster measures 59,4 x 84,1 cm and is printed beautifully on 250 g/m2 Galerie Art Silk paper. Signed by the artist.
