The black-and-white works in the series Untitled portray older women with their faces hidden behind the hair enshrouding their heads and necks.
Different shades and degrees of greying can be sensed in the work, symbolising the ageing process that gradually transforms the female body.The women’s hair has multiple layers of meaning, appearing simultaneously dead and alive. Long hair has traditionally been a symbol of female beauty and sexual allure. Yet grey hair is rarely part of this cultural and visual stereotype of feminised sensuality.
Untitled is a series of photogravures, a technique located between photography and etching that was invented in the 1850s as one of the first methods of photographic reproduction. Trine Søndergaard’s choice of this tactile, porous medium instead of polished photographic prints allows her portraits to hover between historical periods and expressive forms.
Untitled was made for Trine Søndergaard’s solo exhibition “Nearly Now” at Gammel Holtegaard February 5 – April 5 2021.
