In Trine Søndergaard’s Interior series we encounter empty rooms, hushed and abandoned. Only the walls, floors, doorways, light and shadows lead our gaze from one room to the next. The rooms portrayed are the galleries of Gammel Holtegaard, a museum north of Copengagen, which the artist has captured between exhibitions, giving us the chance to experience them in a stripped yet often hidden state.
Like the Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøj (1864-1916), known for his minimalist paintings of interiors, Trine Søndergaard’s works explore emptiness and absence – and the limits for the reduction and paring down of the motif in a work of art.
This part of the Interior series was made for Trine Søndergaard’s solo exhibition “Nearly Now” at Gammel Holtegaard February 5 – April 5 2021.
Here Trine Søndergaard also alludes to Gammel Holtegaard’s late Baroque architecture and the period’s use of spatial illusions. A single, large-scale Interior work has been hung in the gallery to create the illusion of an additional room in the old manor house.
