  • The mid-19th century headgear is made of ornate gold embroidery. The women’s faces are turned away, and the photographs thus focus on an item of clothing that was once a status symbol for women in the more affluent peasant communities. Gold symbolises prosperity, wealth and even divinity. The young women posing have chosen their own clothing, uniting past with present.
