CCA Andratx is pleased to present the exhibition WORKS by Trine Søndergaard.
The exhibition introduces the artist’s long spanning photographic exploration of concepts such as time, shared remembrance, silent inner rooms, and women’s occupations and roles through history, and features photographic works from the period 2005-2023. Trine Søndergaard’s practice is grounded in an objective and documentary attitude, which is heightened through reduction, poetic narratives, and an absolute proximity to art history.
Sight and gaze are principal themes in Trine Søndergaard’s work, which is also characterized by an exploration of portrait photography as a genre. Such as in the artist’s iconic series Hovedtøj and Guldnakke, where Søndergaard incorporates various historical garments from the beginning of the 19th century to the early 20th century – all generously lend to the artist by local Danish cultural historical collections.
These garments were created by women, for women, and in the photographic works they are worn by local, young girls, dressed in their own, contemporary clothes. The works focus on rendering that which cannot be found in the clothes themselves, but which is connected to a feminine world of experience. In the images, people meet across time – not as specific individuals, because these are not personal portraits: With their eyes directed away, the people who are depicted remain unidentifiable.
People, architectural spaces, and garments are among Trine Søndergaard’s most frequent motives. Common to the works is a distinct interest in time. Or perhaps, in fact, in a dissolution of time. Trine Søndergaard’s work crosses time and connects past and present, history and now. Photography is known for capturing fleeting moments, but something almost paradoxical arises from Søndergaard’s determination on slowing down the pace, as she examines the empty, quiet, and slow.
WORKS has previously been shown at Dunkers Kulturhus (SE), The Gotheborg Museum of Art (SE) and The Royal Library – The National Photography Collection (DK). In 2020, the catalogue Trine Søndergaard: 203 Works was published by The Gothenburg Museum of Art and Fabrikbook, which brings together 203 meticulously selected works. The exhibition at CCA Andratx marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in Spain.
