Homage to Older Women
Billboard Project Copenhagen
Society is full of cultural narratives and expectations of what older women are, can do and should be.
To counter this HOMAGE TO OLDER WOMEN invites 100 women artists from Scandinavia to express their personal view of older women and this phase of their lives. The individual works of art on railboards in stations in and around Copenhagen present 100 visual statements that bring a broader and more nuanced picture of older women into public space.
The project symbolises and generates solidarity across the generations, creating an artistic community that pays tribute to the wrinkles, wisdom and life experience of older women to generate recognition and present alternative visions.
It is 20 years since Danish artist Hanne Lise Thomsen made her first billboard project WOMAN 2003 in Copenhagen with works by 100 women artists from Scandinavia. To mark the occasion and continue the pioneering work it initiated HOMAGE TO OLDER continues to develop old and new networks and connections between women artists in the region. Through its key mission of providing a new and diverse view of older women the project aims to create a sense of community and solidarity across generations. The billboard project is the concept and initiative of Danish artist Hanne Lise Thomsen developed and produced in collaboration with Danish curator Lise Grüner Bertelsen.
